Volunteers play a vital role in our work—whether it’s helping at events, supporting communications, or lending a hand behind the scenes. No matter your skills or availability, there’s a place for you in the Ottawa Community Land Trust!

By volunteering with us, you’ll help create lasting change while connecting with others who share your commitment to permanently affordable housing. Explore our current opportunities below and see how you can make a difference! Support will be provided, including training and orientation, for all volunteer opportunities.

Event Outreach Ambassador

Help spread the word about OCLT at local events!

Are you friendly, outgoing, and passionate about building stronger communities? Join us as an Event Outreach Ambassador and help represent OCLT at farmers markets, festivals, and other public events!

What You’ll Do:

  • Greet and engage with community members at our information table
  • Hand out flyers and promotional materials
  • Share information about our mission, programs, and how people can get involved
  • Answer basic questions (training provided)
  • Help set up and take down display materials (as needed)

 

What We’re Looking For:

  • A positive attitude and willingness to chat with people
  • Interest in community building, affordable housing, or social justice (a plus!)
  • Comfort working outdoors at public events

 

Time Commitment:

Flexible! Most events happen on weekends and last 2–4 hours. You can sign up for individual shifts based on your availability.

Training will be provided, and you won’t be on your own!

Social Media Contributor / Coordinator

Use your better judgment to create engaging social media posts on various social platforms that highlight our work, events, or mission. Posts can include photos, quotes, people spotlights, updates, relevant news articles, or community stories—whatever you feel best represents us today.

What You’ll Do:

Post to social media using guidelines including: 

  • Using a positive, community-focused, respectful and inclusive tone
  • Adhering to plain language principles
  • Hyperlinking to web pages (OCLT and others) and tagging accounts/profiles (OCLT and others) when appropriate
  • Use of relevant hashtags 
  • Regular promotion of membership
  • Adhering to basic branding guidelines 
  • Use of Canva when appropriate 
  • Liking and sharing posts from other relevant organizations
  • Following our recommended posting schedule
Social Media Contributors are also encouraged to regularly build on our existing list of friends. connections, and followers.
Training and onging support will be provided,  making this a great opportunity to get real world experience in the social media world!

Newsletter Editor

Help keep our community informed and inspired!

We’re looking for a detail-oriented volunteer to serve as our Newsletter Editor—someone who can take the lead in putting together our digital newsletter and helping us share updates with OCLT’s community.

What You’ll Do:

  • Collect and organize content (event updates, announcements, photos, etc.)

  • Format and lay out the newsletter using a user-friendly platform

  • Coordinate with staff or board members to ensure key information is included

  • Optionally write short updates, blurbs, or introductions

  • Help ensure the final product is clear, accessible, and visually appealing

 

What We’re Looking For:

  • Comfort with basic digital tools (or willingness to learn!)

  • Strong attention to detail and organization

  • Ability to work independently and meet flexible deadlines

  • Interest in writing is a bonus, but not required

 

Time Commitment:
Approximately 3–5 hours per month, depending on the volume of content and your level of involvement in writing.

Training and ongoing support will be offered.

Newsletter Contributor

Are you a strong writer with a passion for community and affordable housing? We’re looking for a volunteer newsletter contributor to help us share news, events, and stories with our supporters. This role involves drafting short articles or updates (monthly or quarterly), collaborating with the team for content ideas, and helping us keep our community informed and inspired. Whether you love storytelling, interviewing residents or volunteers, or just have a good editorial eye, your voice can help us amplify our impact. Experience with writing or editing is helpful but not required.

Website Coordinator

Help us keep our website fresh, functional, and engaging!

We’re seeking a tech-savvy volunteer to serve as OCLT’s Website Coordinator—someone who can take the lead on maintaining and updating our website, ensuring it remains a helpful resource for our community.

What You’ll Do:

  • Update website content (text, images, event info, blog posts)

  • Create or revise pages as needed

  • Help ensure accessibility, clarity, and consistency across the site

  • Collaborate with staff or other volunteers to post time-sensitive updates

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience with WordPress (basic to intermediate)

  • An eye for clean, user-friendly layout and navigation

  • Attention to detail and ability to follow branding/style guidelines

  • Interest in affordable housing or community development is a bonus!

Time Commitment:
Flexible—approximately 2–4 hours per month, depending on activity. Some months may be lighter or busier depending on events and updates.

Training and ongoing support will be offered for this role. This is a great opportunity to get WordPress and Elementor experience!

Grant Writer

Help OCLT secure vital funding to advance our mission of creating and preserving affordable housing! We are seeking a detail-oriented and persuasive writer to research funding opportunities, draft compelling grant proposals, and assist with reporting to funders. The ideal candidate will have strong writing and organizational skills, an ability to work independently, and a passion for community development. Experience in grant writing or fundraising is an asset, but enthusiasm and willingness to learn are equally valued.
